Join us in congratulating Lowe’s own, Rachel Waldron, for being selected as a National Recreation and Park Association Hero for all of her hard work as the Recreation Program Supervisor for the City of Dunwoody! We are so grateful that she is a part of our herd!
Read below to see what the City of Dunwoody, Georgia had to say about Rachel:
“Rachel Waldron is the recreation program supervisor for City of Dunwoody – Government Parks & Recreation and is in charge of creating and implementing special events and programs for the community. When Rachel started five years ago, only three events were offered – a summer movie, Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies. Programs put on by the parks department were non-existent, and only programs offered by current non-profit groups in the community were available.
Dunwoody, Georgia, became a city (from DeKalb County) in 2008, and the parks department was established in June of 2010. Dunwoody is home to almost 200 acres of park land and about 48,000 residents. From 2010 to 2014 there was only one employee, the parks director. Then Rachel (as well as a maintenance supervisor) was added to the staff at the end of 2014. Since 2014 Rachel has created and implemented 25+ events per year and added 10 program offerings on top of what the non-profit groups in the community provide.
“Our team is small but mighty! Our events reach all demographics in Dunwoody and all ages. With the exception of the annual Wine Stroll and Winter Wonderland ice skating, all events are free to the community,” says Rachel. “These bring in all races and socio-economic tiers found in Dunwoody. The annual Wine Stroll not only brings the community together in a different ‘adult’ way, but also showcases local business owners.”
Now in 2020, Rachel will also be charged with managing new staff and seeking sponsorships for the department and its events.”
