dunwoody nature center stormwater pond
PROJECT LOCATION
Dunwoody, GA
PROJECT DATE
2018
The green infrastructure was constructed of river rock and granite veneer walls matching the detention basin wall and was designed to capture runoff in a concrete pipe and direct the water into the plunge pools.
The main building of the Dunwoody Nature Center is located downstream of numerous adjoining properties. Several of these properties collect runoff in a drainage ditch located north of the Dunwoody Nature Center Driveway. This ditch flows east towards Wild Cat Creek along the north side of the main building at the Nature Center. The trails, outbuildings, and program areas were negatively affected by erosion, debris accumulation, and frequent flooding from this drainage. In addition, the construction of the Nature Center Pavilion also increased the impervious area in the basin, resulting in a slight increase in stormwater flows to these areas.
Lowe staff proposed constructing an extended detention pond with a micro pool to address the flooding issues, alleviate additional impacts from the construction of the Nature Center Pavilion, and provide a water quality benefit to the site. The City conducts various public involvement and outreach events at the Nature Center throughout the year. During education events with neighboring schools, the pond has become a useful visual tool to teach students about stormwater management. So much so, that the Parks Department constructed an eco-classroom with a green roof adjacent to the facility.
