Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technician

Job Summary:
Lowe Engineers is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Technician to support our utility investigation and mapping services. This role is responsible for locating, designating, and documenting underground utilities to support engineering design and construction activities. The ideal candidate has experience with utility locating technologies, a strong understanding of field procedures, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Perform utility locating and designation using electromagnetic (EM) equipment, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and other SUE technologies
• Collect accurate field data for underground utilities, including horizontal and vertical positioning
• Mark utilities in the field in accordance with project requirements and industry standards
• Document findings through field notes, sketches, and digital data collection
• Assist with vacuum excavation (test holes) to verify utility depth and location (Quality Level A)
• Coordinate with survey crews, engineers, and project managers to support project deliverables
• Maintain and operate SUE equipment, ensuring proper calibration and care
• Follow safety protocols and adhere to company and industry standards



Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training in surveying, utilities, or related field preferred
• 1–3+ years of experience in SUE, utility locating, or related field preferred
• Familiarity with EM locating equipment, GPR, and vacuum excavation practices
• Understanding of ASCE 38 standards (Quality Levels A–D) preferred
• Ability to read and interpret utility plans and construction drawings
• Basic knowledge of CAD or GIS systems is a plus
• Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
